Alloy Description

Stainless Steel 316L is the low carbon version of 316 grade. It is the standard grade has good resistance to oxidation in the intermittent service up to 870 deg C and offer continuous service up to 925 deg C. these are ideal to us at 425 to 860 deg C and if corrosion resistance in water is required it is not recommended. For instance, the lower carbon version is recommended because of its carbide precipitation. However, where the high strength is required at temperatures above 500 deg C, this grade is recommended.

It has excellent corrosion resistance ability when it is exposed to a range of corrosive environments and other media. It is considered as marine grade; however, it is not resistive to warm salt waters. These warm chlorides can cause crevice and pitting corrosion. This grade is subjected to stress corrosion cracking above 60 deg C. The fabrication process of SS should b performed only tools dedicated to the grade. Special consideration should be taken to avoid cross contamination.
