General properties

Stainless Steel 309 is an austenitic SS developed for application in high temperatures corrosion resistance applications. It has the ability to resist oxidation up to 1900 deg F under non-cyclic conditions. The frequent thermal cycling downs oxidation resistance approx 1850 deg F. It has chromium and low nickel content that allow, alloy to use in sulfur containing environments up to 1832 deg F. this grade is not preferred for use in highly carburizing atmospheres since it exhibits only moderate resistance to carbon absorption. This alloy is also preferred for nitriding, oxidizing, cementing and thermal cycling applications. The maximum service temperature is down.

When it is heated 1202 deg F to 1742 deg F. the alloy is subjected to sigma phase precipitation. The solution annealing treatment is performed in this temperature will restore a degree of toughness. It is also available in the low carbon version. It has great fabricability. The higher carbon version is modified for improved creep resistance. In most application, the grain size and carbon content of the grade can meet both higher and lower requirements. Moreover, this alloy is welded by all standard fabrication process.
